Sci Fi Wi Fi

My amazing life story will have to be on hold for a couple of weeks. I'm on holiday, taking a well earned break.

For some crazy reason I fancy reading some science fiction. I've just finished Richard Matheson's entertaining yet laborious The Shrinking Man. Couldn't get on with Neil Gaiman or Brian Aldiss. Got some Wyndham and Bradbury lined up. I like them. Or at least I think I do.

Any others you can recommend? As the actress said to the bishop, I think I had enough Dick in my younger days.

Asimov any good?

  3. how about Michael Crichton, he's recently died so if you think they're total crap you can be sure that there'll be no more coming along.

  7. I was an avid Sci Fi reader in my teens but can't remember the last SF title I read.

Particularly outstanding in my memory is H.P. Lovecraft although the books I remember best may be labeled Fantasy rather than Sci Fi.

But don't bother with my opinion as I was stoned for much of that period.

  8. Scarlet - A whole book about martians eating mashed potato sounds right up my street.

Boz - Thank you. But a week away from the computer next week! I'll go mad!

Ziggi - Thank you. I'll take a look in the library.

Rog - I think Doris Stokes' Imagination is the book you're referring to.

Kaz - So why am I not typing this in a space suit?

MJ - I've read a bit of Lovecraft and it put the shits up me. I definitely won't be doing that in an unfamiliar property. Apparently everybody must get stoned but I never have. I must admit it's more appealing than reality at the moment.

  11. Stick to Dan Dare and the Mekon. Lots of nice pictures and not much text.

    Quatermass is the pits.

  15. I tried to read SF in order to have conversations with my mom but nope - couldn't be doing with it. The genre I mean. So can't rec anything.
I was stuck in a university sickbay once and someone brought me a Doris Lessing SF novel - didn't like it but it led me on to read everything else she'd written. Not many jokes.

  16. I read Wilbur Smith as recommended by my dad. But the book he really wanted me to read was Hawaii. I never have.

Sorry, Geoff, a bit late with this: you should get one of the annual "best of" collections edited by Gardner Dozois. He has impeccable taste. Failing that, I recommend you read some Robert Charles Wilson. Any of them are good (read Spin before its sequel, Vortex), but I have a suspicion you would enjoy his latest, Julian Comstock.
