Anyone For Tennis?

Their 4x4 was written off by a falling tree in last week's high winds. Good for the tree, I say, taking one of the bastards with it.

Unfortunately, when it comes to motor insurance, this is not an Act Of God, and they can choose a new £25,000 monster.

Also, luckily for them, there's a brand new 4x4 out. The queue to test drive one is predictably long.

In a year in which we are not going to fly, reducing our carbon footprint to the size of a sparrow's, it's heartwarming to discover that other members of my extended family are doing their best to help with the destruction of the planet. I totally despair of the selfish human race as I look at my smug face in the mirror.

*******

Yesterday was spent re-evaluating our CD collection. Which meant bringing down all the 80s, 90s, and early noughties CDs I'd stuffed in the loft a few years back and bringing some back down into the listening fold.

I tend to have manic purges now and then and throw the babies out with the bathwater. Betty is more sensible (if it wasn't for her I'd have got rid of half the contents of the house by now).

So welcome back Moby, Madonna, Jake Slazenger, Manic Street Preachers, Radiohead, Mad Professor, Tricky, and Fairport Convention. All that Britpop shit went straight back into the loft however, to have their own Britpop party with Elvis Costello and Nick Cave brooding in the corner.

Dismissing Jake Slazenger? What was I thinking of?

  1. I do worry about the whole carbon footprint thing. I didn't fly last year. I don't drive a car, and in fact can't, and don't want to. And yet I feel like I'm trying to hault a tidal wave with a parasol. Ho hum. At least when we're all swimming we can bellow those 3 beautiful words: told you so.

4 x 4's should steer clear of trunk routes then.

Who is Jake Slazenger? Did he have singles with Annette Court? He's not another of your miserable sods is he Geoff? Which reminds me, if Polar Bears are forced to move down to the Antarctic from the Arctic due to global warming, will they become bi-polar bears?

(I'm off to lie down now)

  3. Del - I could do without a car most of the time, but it does come in useful now and again. Then again we live close to the town centre so it's easy for us to shop without driving.

Murph - Jake isn't one of my miserable sorts. He's quite cheerful, really. He is a bit highly strung and makes a hell of a racquet, though. Daniel Johnston's a bit like a bi-polar bear.

  4. Like you, I do manic purges. I recently bought copies of the purged stuff on Amazon market place. Sigh. I'm going to get an under-bed storage box for my purges instead.

  6. Llewtrah - Welcome. The loft is very useful, if a bit cramped. You end up walking bent over for the next hour after you've been up there.

Midget Arse - Welcome, too. I stupidly gave away most of my LPs. This was the before Betty years as she wouldn't have allowed me.

  7. Must admit, I'd never heard of Jake. But the Mad Professor, wasn't he the godfather of dub?

  8. Bar the Moby you've just described the contents of my MP3 player, though I lack the sense to banish any of it. I've been listening to nowt but Generation Terrorist and '(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes' for about a fortnight now and I think it's making me go a bit strange.

  9. Yay to the Mad Professor!

  10. Radiohead, eh?

Contemplates the propriety of using such a throwaway remark as leverage for his forthcoming book about OK Computer. Decides against.

  11. Istvanski - He may be mad but not as crackers as Lee Perry.

Violet - The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes is probably my favourite Costello track. But I've heard it so many times it automatically plays in my head every so often.

    Billy - Yay!

Tim - We've got the album out of the loft especially for your book.

Am I the only one who cannot keep up with your changing musical tastes?

  13. I've completely reinvented myself over the years.

    I really don't know who I am.

  14. As Supertramp might infer.

I can't either but it's good when things cross. Fairport Convention, Geoff? I really should be ten years older.

  16. If I got a 'Hummer' everyday I wouldn't care what I drove.

All of my CDs are dormant in the subterranean cache with the vinyl and cassettes and a few 8 tracks...
everything is on this confounded contraption which is so bloody convenient...I can flick to another song on a whim.

I finally realised that I only actually listen to about 50 songs anyway..except on Friday Nights when it's just moi et Appletons.

So..where is all of the King Crimson, Wishbone Ash, Be Bop Deluxe, Eno and Jane County & Electric Chairs hidden?

  17. Be Bop Deluxe and Eno are downstairs with the regularly played albums. Wishbone Ash went years ago, I'm afraid.
